Ngāti Whātua has a large population base and maintains a strong presence throughout the Auckland and lower Northland regions. The 2001 Census population of Ngāti Whātua was estimated to be 12,102 and the adjusted population figures used in the Maori Fisheries Act 2004 estimates the Ngāti Whātua population at 13,113. More recently, the 2006 Census population of Ngāti Whātua was estimated to be 14,721. While there are a number of variables in estimating iwi populations based on census data, this does demonstrate that Ngāti Whātua is one of the largest groupings in the Auckland and Northland region.
Just over 10,000 people live in the Northland and Auckland regions combined. 3,344 of those registered are in Northland while 7,152 of those are registered in Auckland.
