Te Rautaki o Te Reo Maori - Reo Strategy

Te moemoea: (The vision)

Te Runanga O Ngāti Whātua has a sacred obligation to uphold the mana of Ngati Whatua and contribute to whanau wellness outcomes and is showing leadership for this kaupapa through our current review of the Ngāti Whātua Heru Hāpai Reo Strategy. The review aims to reconnect with whanau as a way of revitalising Te Reo me nga Tikanga in the rohe by building the capacity of conversant speakers of present and future generations to come. This is a whanau orientated kaupapa which the Runanga facilitates and supports and is the vital key to ensure the revitalisation of Te Reo and Tikanga practices.

Te Rautaki o Te Reo Maori: (The Reo Strategy)

According to the 2006 Census, just over 70% of Ngāti Whātua have no or very little Reo and Tikanga knowledge. In reviewing the Reo strategy, we began engaging and talking with whānau to get their feedback about what you already knew and what you wanted to have more of. The results of this feedback were captured in a number of ways;

  • Survey ( a summary of the survey findings is provided below)
  • Marae hui
  • Facebook via the link

Through this whānau said;

1) We want our reo and tikanga now 2) We want a sense of belonging and 3) Cultural identity is important

We went back to marae to confirm what whānau were telling us and from this we developed the strategy and four Rautaki Reo strategic goals;

1: Strong leadership - Kai Kōkiri

2: Collective responsibility - Tūhonotanga

3: Inclusive learning - Ngā Raraunga

4: Authentic practice - Te Hōhonutanga

We are now at the implementation stage and will be holding a series of wānanga within te rohe o Ngāti Whātua based on the Rautaki Reo strategic goals. Parirau, Whiti te Ra (Reweti), Waikaretu (Pouto) and Omaha marae have agreed to host wānanga over the coming year. The first wānanga was hosted by Parirau marae on the 4th - 6th April 2014, it was a successful hui for all.

Whānau interested in attending upcoming wānanga will need to register (as places are limited) by contacting the Runanga office directly on phone no. 09 4700 720. A schedule of wānanga venues and dates is provided below or via our facebook page Te Rautaki o Te Reo Maori - REO Strategy
