The Jolene Patuawa-Tuilave Māori Leadership in Law Scholarship
A Māori Leadership in Law Scholarship in memory of Jolene Patuawa-Tuilave is being established by the University of Otago, in conjunction with Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua and Jolene’s whānau.
A graduate of the University of Otago in 2000 with a LLB and BA, Jolene quickly achieved distinction as a lawyer specialising in Treaty, environmental and Māori law. In 2007, while with the law firm Kensington Swan she took a lead role in helping to steer the Rūnanga through the Treaty settlement process to progress the Iwi claim WAI303.
She was an exceptional advocate for Ngāti Whātua, skillfully leading the Rūnanga through what might otherwise have been an arduous and prolonged process to achieve both a mandate and then terms of negotiation with the Crown. Her passing in June 2010 has prompted a keen desire to ensure that her fortitude is not forgotten.
An appeal has been launched to help raise capital for this scholarship which will be established at the University of Otago, with the aim of offering this for the first time in 2013. For further information about donating to the appeal, please visit www.otago.ac.nz/alumni/donations and http://alumni.otago.ac.nz/MaoriLeadershipScholarship
