Amokura Wins International Award
The Tai Tokerau family violence consortium, Amokura, has won a human rights award in New York.
Amokura is hosted by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua and supported by a consortium of seven northern iwi authorities; Te Aupouri, Te Rarawa, Ngati Kahu, Whaingaroa, Ngapuhi, Ngati Wai and Ngāti Whātua.
Amokura won the Alumni Human Rights Prize from the Leitner Centre for International Law and Justice in New York.
The prize included a trip to New York for Amokura chief executive, Di Grennell, and Advocacy - legal analyst, Ani Pitman to receive the award, and meet with non-governmental organisations and national and international officials.
Associate Minister of Social Development and Employment, Tariana Turia says Tai Tokerau can be proud of their distinguished success in bringing their communities together to address family violence.
"Amokura is dedicated to the goals of promoting safety in all the homes of the north, by innovative strategies to increase community awareness, and to provide simple messages for change. I am delighted for them, and for all of us, that their expertise in this area has been given such prestigious recognition," she says.
