Message from the Chairman

Tena ra koutou ara tatou katoa,

Welcome to our first newsletter of 2009.

I am honoured to again accept the role of chairman of the Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua Trustees following the first meeting of the newly elected board in February. Our board remains largely unchanged with the exception of Russell Kemp, who is replaced by Tapihana Shelford.

I would like to acknowledge Russell's untiring work on behalf of the Rūnanga and his enormous contribution to the progress of our iwi-wide treaty claim in particular. He was instrumental in leading us through to the agreement of a Deed of Mandate with the Crown late last year.

At the same time, I would like to welcome Tapihana Shelford to the board and I am sure he will bring his exceptional qualities to the board's work.

I am anticipating a busy year and some exciting opportunities to build on the progress of the Rūnanga to date.

The Board is committed to implementing the first ever Annual Governance Plan for Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua that has been prepared for the 2008-09 year.

The purpose of the plan is to focus the board on setting a strategic direction for the Office of the Chief Executive within the three sacred obligations of Manaakitanga, Kaitiakitanga and upholding the mana of Ngāti Whātua.

I am convinced that this shift to a more strategic inter-generational scale of thinking is the best way to protect and preserve what it means to be Ngāti Whātua for generations to come.

Heoi ano ra nga mihi nunui kia koutou, oti ra kia tatou katoa.

Naku na
