Message from the Chairman

Tena Ra Koutou Ara Tatou Katoa

As the new decade of 2010 is getting well underway, the opportunities for Ngāti Whātua look set to really take off. Activity around the settlement of outstanding treaty claims in Tāmaki Makaurau and the Kaipara has taken a great leap forward, and progress on the Iwi wide claim is gathering momentum. We are actively engaged in discussions with the Crown regarding revising the Foreshore and Seabed legislation and making a strong case for our desire to regain our mana over coastal resources. There is much work still to be done for claims across the rohe, but we are at last seeing progress.

The government’s plans for whanau ora bode well for Māori, as whanau centric service delivery models are developed across the country. The adoption of a service delivery model for Ngāti Whātua should ultimately align with our obligations of manaakitanga and mana Ngāti Whātua and for the wellbeing of Ngāti Whātua across physical, mental and spiritual dimensions. This too is going to take some work to reorganise our activities, but I see great potential. I can therefore see a busy year ahead for the Rūnanga but I am confident the staff and trustees will rise to the occasion for Ngāti Whātua to go forward to ensure its mana, manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga obligations are upheld.
