Treaty Claim Update

Steady progress is being made with the Tāmaki collective considering treaty settlements in Tāmaki Makaurau.

Ngāti Whātua is one of three groupings of Iwi that make up the collective. The other two are Hauraki/Marutūahu, and Tainui/Waikato/Tāmaki.

The collective are meeting on a fortnightly basis with chief crown negotiator, Michael Dreaver to identify milestones the collective wish to achieve.

The Ngāti Whātua Iwi wide claim is still on track to proceed to an Agreement in Principle stage once the Agreements in Principle have been agreed and signed off for Orākei and Kaipara.

It is likely to be around March 2011 that the Iwi could expect to have a draft Agreement in Principle on the table.

Anyone of Ngāti Whātua descent, can register to be on the Iwi roll. Please email runanga [at] ngatiwhatua [dot] iwi [dot] nz or ph: 09 438 2824 for further information.

Foreshore and Seabed

Ngāti Whātua as part of the nationwide Iwi Leaders forum continues to take part in a series of meetings over the development of the Foreshore and Seabed legislation.

The forum has been meeting with United Nations 'rapporteur' and expert on human and indigenous people's rights, Professor James Anaya.

The Iwi is also continuing to investigate the connections between the Foreshore and Seabed discussions and governance issues in the Auckland region.
