20 Years of Kaipara Festival Celebrated

This month saw the 20th anniversary of the event which first began in 1992 at Kaipara College.

Kapa haka groups from the Auckland region performed at Rodney College in Wellsford.

Supported by Rodney Local Board, organisers encourage first-time performers to join the non-competitive environment with whanau and friends welcome to support the mainly young groups.

Funding comes from iwi, government agencies, Auckland Council and community organisations.

Kapa Haka groups included Te Puru o Tamaki which belongs to the Ngati Whatua o Orakei hapu (sub-tribe) of Ngati Whatua.

They are regular strong competitors at regionals and nationals.

Members are taught aspects like traditional Ngati Whatua waiata for their routine and encouraging whanau to watch a rehearsal before the event.

Some students also have strong ties to the successful young Kahurangi Ki Kaipara Kapahaka group.
