Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua – Board Member

Northern Wairoa Takiwā Representative

I was born, raised and schooled in Dargaville but I reside in Whangarei. I am affiliated to the Ōturei, Te Houhanga and Tama Te Uaua marae. I was elected to the board of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua in 2017 from the Northern Wairoa takiwā. I am married with one son and three daughters. I follow any sport that my children and mokopuna choose to play and they currently include hockey, rugby league, basketball, netball, swimming, rugby and play gym. I held middle management roles with the Department of Maori Affairs in Whangarei and Wellington before being appointed to the Senior Manager, Internal Audit and Management Support position. From there, I was selected to undergo financial analysis training with the Development Finance Corporation specialising in Māori economic development as preparation for moving into one of four Project Analyst roles available within the newly formed Māori Development Corporation, set up in Auckland as a development bank for Māori. I left this job to play a leading role in presenting a framework to Auckland based Iwi Rūnanga, for devolving government services to their members under the Rūnanga Iwi Act 1990. Within the Iwi Transition Agency, I held the roles of Programme Manager, Assistant General Manager and Regional Manager Residual Services on the way to successfully completing the job and returning to Whangārei with my young family. I was then successful in being appointed to the position of Chief Executive for Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua and during my time in that role (1995-2013) I was to be a part of some very significant changes not only within the Rūnanga itself but also within Ngāti Whātua as a whole. I have represented the Rūnanga on the boards of quite a number of both “for profit” and “not for profit entities’ with very good outcomes. I am also a Justice of the Peace. In my role as a Trustee, I seek to contribute positively to the perpetuation of Ngāti Whātua.
