The Māori Electoral Option is for Tāngata Whenua Māori – for everyone who whakapapa Māori. Before 31 March 2023, Māori could switch Rolls – Māori Roll, General Roll – every 5 or 6 years. Legislation was passed last year and as of 1 April 2023, Māori have the option to switch rolls any time. However, when there is a General Election – like there is on 14 October 2023 – Māori are required to switch rolls 3 months before the election date. Māori have up to midnight, 13 July 2023 to switch rolls.
